Adapted by the director together with Fanny Chesnel from her novel Le berceau, the script centres on Joseph who learns that his son and the latter’s partner have just died in an accident. They were expecting a child via a surrogate mother in Belgium. What will become of their future baby? Is Joseph its legitimate grandfather? While their friend Bismuth acts as bodyguard (and ersatz pimp), our lovelies indulge in the debauched fantasies of the club's clientele. Everything and anything is possible. Of course, what these lovelies don't know is that Mike is hiding in the background, taking incriminating photos and making scandalous recordings to use as blackmail. With the influx of extorted cash, Dani hopes to save her failing business. What she may not be prepared for is the response of these so-called Little Girls, or the consequences when Mike falls for Elena, one of his targets.

Moguillansky’s follow-up to The Gold Beetle is a fantasia that elegantly weaves together disparate elements: Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the little match girl, Bresson’s saintly abused donkey Balthazar, a Red Army Faction member’s correspondence with an Argentine pianist, and a composer trying to mount an opera at the Teatro Colón. Winner of Best Argentine Film at last year’s BAFICI, The Little Match Girl is infused with emotion, and never devolves into the obscure or didactic, despite its many literary and cinematic references. Featuring exquisite cinematography from Inés Duacastella, this spectacular work must not be missed.
